What is Chronic Bronchitis?

  • An inflammation of the airways in the lungs that develops over time.
  • Episodes of acute bronchitis that lasts for more than three months and sometimes up to several years.
  • The inflammation produces lots of phlegm that builds up in the airways making it difficult to breathe.

  • Cough with phlegm

Causes

  • Smoking – cigarettes or other forms of tobacco
  • Polluted air, dust or fumes from the environment or workplace

Risk Factors

  • Smoking and existing lung disease
  • Contact with dust, chemical fumes and vapors
  • Air pollution, infections and allergies can worsen the symptoms.

Treatment

  • Stop smoking
  • Cough medicines that are able to clear away phlegm, such as a mucolytic agent like Fluimucil.
